Load Rating The Most Important Specification
A trailer winch's load rating (expressed in kilograms) is the maximum load the winch is designed to pull. This rating should be matched to your boat's weight and "boat weight" in this context means the fully loaded boat: hull, engine, fuel, anchor, safety gear, fishing equipment and any other gear you typically carry. Not just the hull weight on its own.
The practical approach to load rating selection is to look up your boat's approximate loaded weight and then choose a winch rated comfortably above that figure. A winch operating at the limit of its rated capacity on every launch has a shorter service life than one operating well within its rating. As a rule of thumb, choosing a winch rated at least 1.31.5 times your boat's loaded weight gives a practical working margin without unnecessarily oversizing.
