A marine water heater can support hot water for suitable onboard freshwater systems, including galley and shower layouts. Selection should begin with vessel space, capacity requirements, existing plumbing and the type of power or heat source the unit uses. These products involve heated, pressurised and often electrical connections, so planning the full installation before purchase is important.

The water heater needs to work within the existing freshwater system, which includes marine freshwater pumps, suitable marine water tanks and the cold-water supply arrangement. Confirm pressure ratings, hose connections and whether the heater suits the existing system before ordering.

Capacity, Space and Connections

Measure the installation space carefully — dimensions, clearance around fittings, access path and the space needed for connecting hoses all matter, not just the tank capacity. A heater that is rated at the right litre capacity may still be difficult to install if its shape, bracket positions or fitting locations do not suit the available space. Consider mounting orientation, whether the heater will be vertical or horizontal, and how inlet, outlet and pressure-relief fittings will connect to the existing plumbing.

Check pressure ratings carefully. A water heater that sees higher inlet pressure than it is rated for can be a safety issue. Match the heater to the pump pressure, existing system pressure and the stated rating in the product specifications.

Plumbing, Electrical and Installation Planning

Hot-water systems can involve hoses, valves, clamps, safety components and electrical connections, so related marine hose and marine plumbing accessories may be part of the same project. Plan where isolation valves and service access points will sit before starting installation. Follow manufacturer instructions and use a qualified installer where required — this is especially important for electrical, gas-heated or pressurised systems.

Before choosing a unit, map how cold water will enter the heater, how hot water will reach the outlets, and where pressure-relief discharge will be directed safely. Check whether any existing hose, fittings or pressure-reduction components need to be replaced or adjusted for the new heater.

Replacement and Long-Term Planning

When replacing an older heater, compare the existing unit's dimensions, fitting positions and power source carefully against the replacement option — mounting holes, inlet and outlet positions and access panels may differ between models and brands. Confirm that the surrounding hose, fittings, pressure relief and electrical connections are still suitable, or plan to replace them at the same time. This avoids the common problem of a new heater being ordered that does not match the existing connections.

For boats used in colder conditions or stored over winter, check manufacturer guidance on draining, winterising or protecting the heater and connected plumbing from freezing. Service access over the lifetime of the heater is worth considering at the planning stage, particularly on boats where lockers and panels limit how easily the unit can be reached for maintenance.
