Boat Trailer Roller Guide
Boat trailer rollers are one of the most overlooked but most frequently replaced items in the trailerable boat world. Worn, cracked or seized rollers cause hull damage, make launching harder and reduce the amount of control you have over the boat on the ramp. Because rollers degrade gradually hardening, cracking and losing their ability to rotate freely under UV and load many boaters don't notice the problem until they see scuff marks on the hull or the boat starts fighting them on the ramp. What Trailer Rollers Actually Do
Trailer rollers have two distinct functions that are worth understanding separately:
During launching and retrieval rollers allow the boat hull to slide smoothly along the trailer frame as the boat moves on and off the trailer at the ramp. Without rollers (or with rollers that won't spin), the hull drags against the trailer's structural members, creating scuff marks, gel coat damage and resistance that makes loading significantly harder. Rollers that spin freely reduce friction dramatically and make ramp operations much more controlled.
During transport rollers support the hull's weight, distributing load across multiple contact points to prevent the hull from resting directly on the trailer frame. Correctly positioned rollers cradle the hull profile and prevent point loads or flat spots developing on the hull from road vibration over long distances.
When rollers fail at either function either by seizing so they won't rotate, or by deteriorating so they no longer support the hull correctly both of these aspects are compromised simultaneously.
Types of Trailer Rollers and Their Positions
Different roller types are designed for specific positions on the trailer frame:
- Keel rollers mounted on the centreline of the trailer, directly under the hull's keel. Keel rollers are typically larger in diameter than side rollers and are often V-shaped or multi-piece to accommodate the V-shape of the keel profile. They carry a significant proportion of the hull's weight. On many trailers the keel roller series runs the full length of the keel from transom to bow stop.
- Centre rollers additional rollers along the centreline, positioned to support the flat or near-flat sections of the hull bottom between the keel and the chines. More common on flat-bottomed or shallow-V hulls where the hull bottom is relatively flat.
- Side rollers (guide rollers) mounted on adjustable side arms or swinging brackets on either side of the trailer. These guide the hull onto the centreline as it's loaded, and support the hull sides and chines during transport. They prevent the hull from sliding sideways off the trailer on steep ramps.
- Bow stop / bow roller the roller or rubber stop at the forward end of the trailer that the bow contacts when fully loaded. It stops the boat in the correct position and prevents the bow from sliding forward over the trailer frame. Most bow stops are rubber-faced rather than a rolling roller, as the bow contact is a stop point rather than a sliding surface.

Roller Materials Rubber, Polyurethane and PVC Compared
The material of the roller affects its durability, its grip on the hull, its likelihood of leaving marks, and how it performs in the Australian climate:
Rubber rollers are the most common and affordable option. Natural rubber and synthetic rubber (EPDM) rollers provide good grip and cushioning. The main limitation is UV sensitivity rubber rollers in the Australian sun gradually harden, crack and lose their flexibility over time, particularly on trailers stored outdoors. Hardened rubber rollers don't grip and cushion the hull as well as fresh rubber, and they're more likely to develop flat spots from sitting under load. Black rubber can also leave marks on light-coloured gel coat, particularly on trailers that are moved frequently.
Polyurethane (PU) rollers are significantly more UV and heat resistant than rubber and maintain their hardness and shape better in the Australian climate. They're less likely to leave marks on gel coat and generally have a longer service life in outdoor storage conditions. PVC rollers have a smooth surface that offers lower friction than rubber, which allows the boat to slide more freely during loading and retrieval an advantage on shallow ramps or for heavier boats that require more force to load. PVC is also UV resistant and doesn't leave marks. Roller Sizing Bore, Diameter and Width
Selecting the correct roller size requires matching three dimensions:
Bore diameter the internal hole through the roller that the mounting pin passes through. This is the most critical dimension the bore needs to match the bracket pin diameter or the roller won't fit. Common bore sizes in Australian trailering are 1/2 inch (12.7mm), 5/8 inch (15.9mm) and 3/4 inch (19mm). Measure the bracket pin carefully, or remove an existing roller and measure its bore before ordering replacements.
Outer diameter the overall size of the roller. Larger diameter rollers distribute load over a larger area of the hull, which is generally preferred for fibreglass and painted hulls. Smaller diameter rollers are used in tighter spaces or for light-duty applications.
Width (length) how wide the roller is. Wider rollers distribute load over a longer contact area on the hull, reducing point loading. The width needs to fit between the mounting bracket's cheeks check the bracket's internal width before ordering a wider roller as an upgrade.
Roller Brackets and Pins
The roller bracket holds the roller in position on the trailer frame and allows its angle and height to be adjusted to match the hull profile. Bracket types include:
- Fixed brackets a simple welded or bolted bracket with a fixed pin position. Adjustable for height by repositioning on the trailer frame, but not angularly adjustable.
- Swivel brackets the bracket head can swivel on its mounting to match the angle of the hull surface at that position. Common for side rollers that need to follow the curved hull sides.
- Adjustable angle brackets the roller pin position can be adjusted over a range of angles to match different hull shapes. Useful when re-setting up a trailer for a different boat or when the hull shape doesn't suit a fixed-angle bracket.

Signs That Your Rollers Need Replacing
Inspect your trailer rollers at the start of each season and after any significant trailering. Replace rollers that show:
- Cracking or splitting of the roller surface even a small crack will propagate under load and allows water and debris to get inside the roller
- Hardening or brittleness rubber that no longer has any give when pressed is no longer providing proper cushioning
- Flat spots from sitting under load for extended periods, particularly on rubber rollers in hot weather
- Seized rotation the roller won't spin freely on its pin. This is the most functionally significant failure mode a seized roller drags against the hull rather than rolling
- Significant colour loss or surface chalking advanced UV degradation, indicating the material has broken down
- Hull marks or scuffing marks on the hull that appear where rollers contact the boat usually indicate seized or deteriorated rollers
Setting Up Roller Positions for Your Hull
Correct roller positioning is as important as roller condition. A well-set trailer cradles the hull evenly across all roller contact points with no single roller carrying a disproportionate share of the weight. Key principles:
- The keel rollers should contact the keel along its full run without any single roller creating a raised point load
- Side rollers should make firm but not tight contact with the hull sides tight enough to prevent lateral movement, not so tight that they press the hull inward
- When the boat is properly positioned on the trailer, the hull should sit in a consistent orientation and not list to one side
- The boat should slide cleanly onto and off the rollers without needing to be dragged or pushed sideways at any point
After replacing rollers or when setting up a trailer for the first time, load the boat and then check each roller's contact with the hull. Adjust bracket positions until the load is evenly distributed. Recheck after the first few launches as brackets can settle slightly.
Trailering Distance and Roller Maintenance
On long road trips, the boat's weight sits continuously on the rollers for hours. Heat from the road radiated through the trailer frame, combined with the constant vibration of road travel, accelerates roller wear. For long-distance trailering:

How do I know what size rollers my trailer takes?
The critical measurement is the bore the internal diameter of the hole through the roller that the bracket pin passes through.
