Choosing a General Purpose Marine Pump

General purpose pumps are useful for transfer and utility tasks, but they still need to be matched to the job. Flow rate, pressure, suction lift and port size all affect whether a pump will work well in a specific installation. A pump intended for clean water may not suit raw water, diesel, oil or waste.

Compare the general range with more specific options such as marine saltwater pumps, galley pumps and fuel and oil transfer pumps before choosing. A purpose-specific pump can be the better fit where the liquid, duty cycle or hose layout is more demanding.

Practical Checks Before Purchase

• Confirm voltage, current draw and wiring requirements.
• Measure hose size and check whether reducers would restrict flow.
• Check whether the pump is self-priming or must be mounted below the liquid level.
• Review the duty cycle if the pump will run for more than short transfer periods.
