Number of Steps — How Many Do You Need?

For a swimmer in the water to board the ladder comfortably, at least one step needs to be well submerged — deep enough to get a foot on it without having to lift yourself out of the water by arm strength alone.

  • Up to approximately 450mm freeboard: a two-step ladder can be adequate, though three steps is more comfortable
  • 450–750mm freeboard: three steps is typically the minimum; four steps is better

Materials — Stainless Steel vs Aluminium

The two main structural materials for marine boarding ladders are 316 stainless steel and anodised aluminium, each with different characteristics:

316 stainless steel is the premium standard for saltwater marine applications. 316 grade (as distinct from 304 grade) contains molybdenum which significantly improves resistance to chloride corrosion — the type of corrosion driven by saltwater exposure. Properly maintained stainless ladders hold up extremely well in saltwater environments. The trade-off is weight — stainless is heavier than aluminium, which matters on larger multi-step ladders and telescoping designs.

Anodised aluminium is lighter and typically less expensive than stainless. The anodising provides a corrosion-resistant surface, though it's less durable in continuously wet saltwater environments than 316 stainless over the long term. Aluminium ladders are a good practical choice for freshwater and sheltered estuary use. For regular offshore saltwater use, 316 stainless is generally the better long-term investment.

Swim Platform Ladders

Mounting and Installation

Most boarding ladders mount to the transom via a pair of mounting brackets that engage with locating pins or hooks on the ladder frame. This removable mounting allows the ladder to be taken off for storage or maintenance and reinstalled easily. When installing, key considerations are:

  • Bracket position and height — the mounting height determines the angle and reach of the deployed ladder. Too high and the ladder extends outward at a steep angle; too low and the ladder hangs too close to the transom. Trial-fit the ladder before drilling holes if possible.
  • Backing plates — transom-mounted hardware experiences significant dynamic loads from people climbing on it in a seaway. Fibreglass transoms require backing plates behind the mounting surface to distribute the load — without them, fasteners can pull through over time. Backing plates should be as large as practical and made from fibreglass, aluminium or stainless steel. Never use plywood as a backing plate in a wet or submerged location.

Ladder Weight Rating

All boarding ladders have a rated maximum load capacity. This rating should exceed the weight of the heaviest likely user of the ladder, with an appropriate safety margin. Check the product's rated capacity before purchase and don't assume that all ladders are rated the same — there can be significant differences in rated load between seemingly similar products at different price points.
