Choosing marine cable steering parts

Marine cable steering is a common mechanical steering setup for trailer boats, runabouts, tinnies and many outboard-powered vessels. It uses a helm unit, cable and connection hardware to transfer wheel movement to the motor or steering arm. When the system is matched and installed correctly, steering should feel predictable through the wheel without tight spots or excessive slack.

Before choosing a cable steering part, identify the current system type, cable length, helm compatibility and motor connection. Cable length is especially important, because a cable that is too short can bind and a cable that is too long can create awkward loops. When to inspect or replace cable steering

• The wheel feels stiff, notchy or inconsistent through the turn.
• The cable jacket is damaged, crushed or badly corroded.
